Counselor/ContractorLona, a proud Burqueña, was born in Texas but raised in New Mexico. Initially aspiring to be a teacher, she shifted her focus to social work in 2020, driven by her passion for social justice, advocacy, and uplifting her community.
Her social work journey began at Pikes Peak United Way in Colorado Springs, CO, where she served as a Community Liaison Intern. In this role, she supported diverse families through projects that enhanced access to essential services, including housing, healthcare, childcare, immigration support, and financial assistance, embodying a comprehensive approach to service.
After moving back home to Albuquerque, Lona earned her Bachelor of Social Work in 2024 from Eastern New Mexico University. She decided to pursue higher education and enrolled in a graduate program at her alma mater.
Lona embarked on her graduate journey as a Clinical Social Work intern at Harmony Home Health and Hospice, where she offered care and support during delicate life transitions. In this role, she helped clients and their families navigate the emotional and practical challenges related to illness, aging, and end-of-life decisions. Midway through her program, Lona transitioned to the Duke City Mind Institute, where she discovered her passion for individual and family therapy, with a trauma-informed approach. Lona graduated with a Master of Social Work in 2025.
Throughout her life, she has remained deeply committed to social justice, participating in human rights protests and advocating for community members at local city councils. She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to expand her approaches with clients. Lona approaches her clients from a holistic perspective, always meeting them where they are and collaborating on their healing journey.
